What Do We Need to Know Before Designing Drone Protection?
A customer does not need a finished specification before starting. But a few practical questions need answers before the protection concept can be designed properly.
A customer does not need to arrive with a complete technical specification.
In many cases, that would be unrealistic. The customer knows the site, the asset and the operational limits. The protection supplier should help turn that information into a workable concept.
But some questions do need answers before the design can be taken very far.
If those questions are skipped, the work may look like design, but it is mostly guessing. The result may be a frame in the wrong place, a net too close to the asset, foundations that clash with site restrictions or a solution that cannot be installed without interrupting normal operation.
A good first review is not about making the customer do the designer’s job.
It is about finding the limits of the problem early enough.
Start with what must not be hit
The first question is simple, but often not as easy as it sounds.
What exactly needs protection?
On some sites, the answer may be one transformer or one tank. On others, it may be a row of battery containers, a vehicle parking area, a loading point, a control building, a radar position or several assets with space between them.
The answer affects the size and shape of the protection concept.
It also affects priorities. Some assets may need overhead protection. Others may need side protection. Some may need a permanent structure. Others may need a solution that can be prepared in advance and deployed later.
It is useful to be specific here. “Protect the substation” is a starting point. “Protect these transformer bays while keeping this access route open” is already much more useful.
The threat assumption matters
The next question is what type of UAV threat is being considered.
This does not mean the customer has to define everything in technical detail. But there is a difference between a small surveillance drone, a heavier UAV, a fast approach, a low approach or a concern that the UAV may be carrying a hazardous or explosive payload.
Those assumptions affect the netting, the distance behind the net, the frame geometry and the loads that have to be carried.
They also affect how cautious the concept should be.
If the concern includes a possible payload, the design discussion cannot be only about stopping the drone body. It also has to consider separation distance and what should be kept away from the protected asset. The system should not be described as making a payload harmless, but the protection concept can be designed to reduce the risk of direct contact with the asset.
At the first stage, the important thing is to be honest about the concern.
Space is part of the protection
Physical protection needs space.
That is sometimes the most difficult part of the conversation, because critical infrastructure sites are rarely empty. There are roads, gates, fences, maintenance areas, drainage, underground services, snow clearing routes, vehicle movements and equipment that may need to be lifted out or replaced.
The net also needs working distance.
If it is placed too close to the asset, it may not have enough room to move in an impact. If it is placed too far away, it may block access or become unnecessarily large. The right position is usually a compromise between protection, operation and buildability.
This is why photos, drawings and site layouts are helpful, but they do not replace practical discussion.
A drawing may show where a structure fits. The site team usually knows whether it can actually stand there.
Installation limits should be known early
The protection concept also depends on how the system can be installed.
Can installation equipment reach the foundation line? Is the surface asphalt, concrete, gravel or soil? Are there buried cables or pipes? Are there working-hour restrictions? Can the site be shut down, or must it remain live? Are hot works restricted? Is there room to store steel parts or netting during installation?
These questions may sound ordinary, but they often decide the real solution.
A concept that is easy to draw may be difficult to install. A slightly different protection line may save time, reduce disruption or avoid a part of the site where foundations are more difficult.
It is better to find that out before the design is too far developed.
